Preventing Foot Problems

  1. Have children's feet checked by a Podiatrist at an early age, especially if your child walks pigeon toed, out toed, or they do not appear to have an arch.
  2. Do not ignore growing pains. Growth of the limbs and trunk does not hurt. Pain usually means overuse with possible tissue injury.
  3. Use good hygiene, wash between your toes and dry thoroughly. Use an approved skin cream once a day. Call our office for specific recommendations on approved skin creams.
  4. Cut toenails straight across. Do not cut into the inner and outer margins of the nail. Round the inner and outer edge of the nail with a file. The nail should be long enough to extend just beyond where the nail attaches to the skin. Do not cut nails too short.
  5. Treat excessive perspiration by applying an antiperspirant spray once a day. If the problem persists, call our office for an appointment. Excessive perspiration can predispose to blistering, plantar warts and fungal infections of the skin and nails.
  6. Always wear shoes that are sized properly. Have your foot measured for length and width when buying shoes. Make sure the general shape of your foot from front to back and side to side corresponds to the shape of your foot.
  7. Have your feet measured and shoes fit in the mid-afternoon to take into account swelling that may occur during the day.
  8. Use shoes specifically designed for the activity you are doing.
  9. If you are a diabetic, you should see a Podiatrist a minimum of every 6 months regardless whether you having any problems.
  10. Always wear a shoe with a closed to and heel if you lack sensation in your feet.
  11. Never use over the counter corn or callous remedies unless you check with your physician first.
  12. Try to stand on an inclined wedge once or twice a day for five minutes to keep you calf muscle flexible. Stretching the calf is to the foot like an aspirin each day is to the heart. Its good preventative maintenance.
