Blizzard Warning: 12"+ of snow and wind gusts near 45 mph

The STORMTracker Weather Team is closely monitoring a developing winter storm that will dump over a foot of snow on Montana.

We are analyzing every piece of data coming into the weather center in order to provide Montanans with the most accurate forecast ahead of the storm.

Blizzard Warnings have been issued for Blaine, Chouteau, Fergus, Hill, Phillips & Valley Counties from Thursday morning through Saturday morning.

Between 10-14" of snow are expected in these areas, with up to 2 feet of accumulation in the mountains.

Wind gusts up to 45 mph will create significant blowing and drifting of the snow in these areas.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect up and down the Northern Rockies for heavy snow.

TIMING

  • Few rain/snow showers late Wednesday evening into Thursday morning
  • Light snow becomes widespread Thursday morning into the afternoon
  • Moderate/heavy snow Thursday night into Friday morning
  • Light/moderate snow continues off and on through Saturday morning

AMOUNTS

  • 6-15" at lower elevations
  • 1-2' in mountain passes and mountain peaks
    • Great Falls: 11-14"
    • Helena: 10-13"
    • Lewistown: 11-14"
    • Havre: 9-12"
    • Cut Bank: 9-12"
    • Glasgow: 10-13"

IMPACTS

  • Dangerous travel conditions due to snow covered and ice-packed roadways
  • Limited visibility due to areas of falling and blowing snow
  • Frigid temperatures with wind chill values as low as -15
  • Possible power outages in areas with leaves still on trees
