Some business owners and residents in downtown Great Falls have been lobbying for a dedicated full-time police officer in their neighborhood, but until they get one, they're taking action on a new plan for downtown public safety.

The new "Business Watch Program" gives business and property owners an active part in their own security through education and training.

Allison Fried, chair of the Business Improvement District, said, "This is a step in the direction of a downtown police officer. I think we will continue to want and ask for and try to find solutions to a downtown police officer. This is one part of potentially that solution."

The first meeting is scheduled for 5:30 on Tuesday, September 14th, at Neighborworks, located at 509 1st Avenue South and will then be held on the second Tuesday of each month.

The topic for the first meeting is personal safety; GFPD officer Jesse Slaughter will make a presentation and field questions. Downtown business and property owners are encouraged to attend but anyone is welcome.
