The trial of Jason Caughey, charged in the death of Sasha Holt , is drawing near.
Caughey, the 39-year old former volunteer fire chief and reserve deputy, is charged with striking and killing Holt with his vehicle as she was walking along Fox Farm Road in 2009.
During a pre-trial hearing on Thursday, Caughey's defense team brought forth a motion to dismiss the case due to lack of probable cause. The defense called into question the blood alcohol content of both Caughey and Holt on the night of Holt's death.
Caughey's attorney said that language in court documents is unfair by indicating that, by drinking beer at a local bar, Caughey knew he could cause bodily injury or death to another person. The motion failed.
After hearing a few other motions and administrative items, Caughey was arraigned on new charges.
He pled not guilty to a charge of failure to remain at the scene of a crime where death or bodily injury has occurred, and a felony count of criminal endangerment.
Previously, Caughey had pled not guilty to failure to remain at the scene of a fatal accident, vehicular homicide while under the influence and the alternative charge of negligent homicide. This week the negligent homicide charges were dropped and replaced with criminal endangerement.
Caughey's trial is set to begin on September 20th.
