Selena Coburn has danced her way from Great Falls to New York City, and returned to the Electric City this week to help others.

At the young age of 14, Selena was one of the founding members of the Missouri River Dance Company.

Now a young woman, Selena returned to Great Falls for a visit and to take on a new role.

In January, Selena was appointed co-artistic director of the dance company; from her home in New York, she will propose dance projects and bring them back to Montana to perform.

She noted, "Now that I am graduated I feel like I really have enough time to really put into it and make some things happen for Great Falls."

Beyond performances, Selena is committed to keeping the arts alive in Great Falls through various outreach methods.

She said, "Dancing was one of the number one things that made me a happy, strong, person in my life growing up. It's what helped me know I could achieve what I wanted to, if I applied the right discipline to it, so I think it is great for any student even if they aren't working for a dance career, but just to be a strong member of the community."

As part of the outreach, Coburn's choreographer Pareena Lim taught yoga to members of the Great Falls community on Tuesday.

Pareena noted, "It offers others that aren't directly involved in dance insight to their body and how their body informs much of what they do in life."

Coburn still lives and works in New York City, but plans to plant her roots back in Montana in the future.
