Day Three: Montana Legislature at a Glance

Wednesday, January 5, 2010 legislators met for the first time in committee. The meetings were focused on getting organized, and talking about their perspectives budgets.

The Joint Subcommittee on Education also met to discuss the education budget. Montana Superintendent of Schools Denise Juneau, Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns, MSU President Waded Cruzado, and UM President Royce Engstrom all spoke to the legislators about funding education.

The Republicans announced the Senate will hear the first reading of Senator Jason Priest's (R-Red Lodge) health care bill Wednesday, January 12. The bill would require the Montana Attorney General to file a motion to join the Florida lawsuit which challenges the constitutionality of the federal health reform. The GOP Senate Caucus reports, "There are no plans to rush a vote on health care repeal or reform."

Representative Gary MacLaren (R-Victor) is also carrying a bill which revises health care laws. The House will hear that bill on Wednesday, January 12 as well.
