More and more Montanans are getting medical marijuana cards, and legislators are looking at how the drug should be regulated.
One particular area of interest is how the Medical Marijuana Act affects schools and local governments.
During an Education & Local Government Interim Committee meeting on Thursday in Helena, legislative staff members highlighted some problems the act has brought to schools, such as banning dispensaries from setting up near a school and whether or not students with medical marijuana cards should be allowed to smoke on school property.
"Currently smoking is prohibited on school grounds, but I think the Act is not clear on whether or not it could be ingested in some other form," stated Legislative Services Staff Attorney Helen Thigpen. "Then of course, there is a concern raised about ffunding and the Federal Drug Free Schools Act."
The Children Families Health & Human Services Committee is in charge of dealing with the medical marijuana issue. But, this committee must make suggestions about how to address the issues affecting schools and local governments.
