FBI investigating fatal shooting near Browning

HELENA - Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting near Browning on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.

An FBI spokesman in Salt Lake City confirmed multiple official reports of a shooting and said it is being investigated by Tribal police, the Glacier County Sheriff's Office, and the FBI.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

The FBI spokesman said that the investigation is ongoing and no further information was available.

(UPDATE, 12:30 pm) According to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, at around 8 p.m. on Thursday his office received a report of a suicidal person who was driving through Flathead County.

Sheriff's deputies located the vehicle in West Glacier and attempted to stop it to conduct a welfare check.

The person driving the vehicle didn't stop; a chase ensued eastbound on Highway 2.

Due to unfavorable road conditions, Flathead County deputies stopped the chase at Essex.

At that time, the Glacier County Sheriff's Office, the Montana Highway Patrol, and Tribal law enforcement got involved by attempting to stop the vehicle using spike strips approximately 10 miles down the highway.

Curry could not release specifics of what happened, but he knows the driver of the vehicle was shot and killed.

(UPDATE, 1:05 pm) Helena Police Chief Troy McGee reports that on Thursday evening, police received a report from a Helena woman who said that her 70-year old husband had left home without indicating where he was going, and that he had a shot-gun.

Helena police received information just before 8 p.m. that the man may have been in the Bigfork area.

Law enforcement officials in that area were notified, and at approximately 10:15 p.m., Helena police were advised that the man had been found near Browning and was dead.
