Signatures are due today to the county for initiatives hoping to make the November ballot in Montana, and organizers hit the streets hoping to gather enough signatures.
One group is trying to get an initiative on the ballot to repeal the current medical marijuana law and write a new one, and end what they call "pot abuse." Petitioners say the current law, Initiative 148, is intended to help those with medical problems, but makes it too easy to get a medical marijuana card.
The number of card-holders has shot up in recent months, and the issue of medical marijuana has been hotly debated in Great Falls and other communities across Montana, with some enacting moratoriums on businesses that sell it.
Statewide, organizers need to collect 24,300 signatures in order to place the issue on the November ballot, and petitioners say that in Great Falls alone they have received over a thousand signature in a few days.
If the number of required signatures is not met, petitioners say the next step will be to contact the Montana Legislature.
