Fire crews investigating smoke from Great Falls refinery

GREAT FALLS - Fire crews are on the scene investigating smoke that is coming from the Calumet Refinery in Great Falls.

The smoke is billowing from a tower at the refinery, located at Smelter Avenue and 9th Street, and blowing into Black Eagle.

Fire crews from Great Falls and Black Eagle are investigating to determine if there is any public health hazard.

There are no indications that there is a fire.

We will update you when we learn more.


(UPDATE, 7:53 pm) Great Falls Fire Rescue tells us that the refinery was burning "rich" oil, and that there does not appear to be a fire.


(UPDATE, Wednesday morning) Great Falls Fire Rescue says that their initial investigation determined that a supply line that heats asphalt broke and spilled into the fire box (heater).

Once it was shut off, the residual asphalt burned off.
