The City of Great Falls announced that both sections of the Pacific Steel and Recycling Trailside Dog Park will be reopened effective Monday, March 15th. The park had been closed to preserve the grass over the winter and prevent further damage to the turf.

The dog park opened in July 2009 and immediately became a hit with pooches and their people; the heavy usage, coupled with with poor soil conditions, placed significant stress on the grass and could lead to permanent damage if maintenance steps are not taken, according to city officials.

They explained that people visiting the park tend to congregate in certain places, which has resulted in grass being destroyed in large areas. The Animal Foundation is funding a project to install 8’asphalt walkways in the park in an attempt to mitigate further turf damage.

The park will be closed during the pathway construction which should begin sometime in the next several weeks.

The park is located along River Drive near 9th Street North.
