Great Falls man charged after allegedly offering to kill woman's ex-husband

Shawn Michael Smith of Great Falls has been charged after allegedly offering to kill a man.

Smith, 53, has been charged with solicitation to commit assault with a weapon.

A woman trying to buy Smith's home told him that she couldn't get financing because she was recently divorced, her husband got the house, and her name was still on the loan, so she couldn't qualify for normal financing.

Smith then reportedly told the woman that people like her ex-husband "don't need to exist," and asked her if she would like to borrow a gun; when she declined, Smith indicated that he would kill her ex-husband for a small fee.

Court documents say that Smith told her that "it's a little disturbing at first, but you get used to it," and that "there are ways to take care of him and not get caught."

Smith repeated the offer several more times over the next few weeks, and reportedly showed her hunting rifles, "throwing-type" weapons, and some sort of "smoke weapon." He also allegedly claimed to have other weapons, including unregistered weapons, and told her that he knew how to cover things up.

The woman finally reported the incidents and officers obtained a voice search warrant.

When the woman met with Smith again, he again stated that he would "take care of" her ex-husband, and then told her that there are legal ways to put her ex-husband "in the dirt."

Court documents say that when he was questioned by authorities after the meeting, Smith admitted to making the threatening statements and specifically admitted that he had stated that he would kill the woman's ex-husband.

The state requested a $10,000 bond for Smith.
