Young lawmakers in a Great Falls social studies class are helping Haiti earthquake victims.

A fifth-grade class at Morningside Elementary School is spending time learning about how bills are passed through Congress.

As part of the lessons, each student wrote a bill, and Ashley Furr proposed a bill to have a bake sale to raise money for the Red Cross. Great Falls student puts civics lesson to work to help Haiti

Ashley's bill, titled "Hearts for Haiti," passed by a three-fourths majority and was signed by the principal, who was acting as president.

And during lunch on Thursday, Ashley's bill was put into action, as she started selling baked goods that she and her mom baked, along with donations from her classmates.

Ashley explained, "Well, I just heard about the earthquake in Haiti and how it was a 7.5 on the Richter scale. So I wanted to earn some money for the Red Cross to help them go and help Haiti."

Ashley plans to continue the sale during tonight's parent teacher conferences and during lunch tomorrow.
