Cascade County officials have identified 18-year old Devin Spriggs of Great Falls as the person who died at Hardy Creek this week.

Authorities have ruled that the cause of death is accidental drowning.

Spriggs was with a group of friends when he apparently jumped off some rocks at the popular water spot around 7:00 pm on Wednesday.

His friends watched him go under, but he did not surface, and that's when Search & Rescue was called to the scene.

Crews spent much of Wednesday evening and all day Thursday attempting to find him. He was located by authorities at 4:10 pm, near the area where he disappeared.

Long-time residents in this canyon tell us they have come to expect this scene year after year, and crews combing the river say it's time to find a solution to prevent any more search and rescues stemming from this site.

Authorities told us that alcohol was not a factor in Spriggs' death.

I'm so sorry to the family. i know how it is to lose a loved one. i lost my father in February.
Devin was such a nice friend! He was in my math class with me, helped me with almost everything i didn't understand. I wasn't the closest friend he had but we sure did laugh about a lot! He was always a fun person to hang out with and i got to know him a lot better by the end of the school year.
I'm so sorry. I'll keep him in my prayers. I'm gonna miss him.
