Last night the Western Art Week festivities in Great Falls got started with Charlie Russell's birthday party, but for many shows, Thursday is the official opening day.

Over at the Four Seasons Exhibition hall, Great Falls sculptor Jay Contway and friends have their sale in full swing, and their event features 40 artists with their own booths.

There are no auctions at the Jay Contway and Friends Art Show, and proceeds from every sale go directly to each artist. Organizers say its "cowboy focus" makes the show a great addition to a wonderful week of art.

Lynn Contway, Contway & Friends Art Show organizer, noted, "We also have spur makers and bit makers, and across the way we have a fellow who makes saddles. So this is where you're going to find the cowboys from around here, because they're coming to look for the tack they know is here."

The show features a variety of art including sculptures, paintings, jewelry, leather clothes, pottery, canoes and metal work. There is also a real chuckwagon where coffee is served all day.
