Last-Second Field Goal Lifts Butte to State AA Football Title

BUTTE - The Butte Bulldogs have won their first State AA Football Championship since 1991. Down 36-35 with less than five seconds to go, Jake Dennehy kicked a 46-yard field goal for the win at legendary Naranche Stadium.

Butte held a 14 point lead over Bozeman late in the 4th quarter, but a quick Will Weyer touchdown pass and onside kick gave the Hawks momentum.

Moments later, Weyer fired another touchdown to Will Dissly and coach Troy Purcell decided to go for a 2-point conversion and the lead. Weyer again found Dissly in the endzone and Bozeman had a 36-35 lead.

Butte returned the following kickoff return to midfield where Dallas Cook ran for a first down, then threw to the sideline, putting the Bulldogs in field goal position with 3.8 seconds left.

That's when Dennehy booted the 46-yard kick to give the Mining City their long awaited State Championship, and fans, friends, and parents swarmed the field to celebrate. Reporters asked Dennehy after the game if he knew the kick was good as soon as it left his foot, to which the Bulldogs hero replied with a simple, "No."

Bulldog fans continued to celebrate into the night, including a championship parade through the foggy streets of the Mining City.
