A Billings mail truck caught fire on Monday afternoon while stopped in Billings Heights around 1:00 p.m. on White Circle.

Jesse Slivera, the Billings letter carrier driving the truck on his route, was not injured, nor was anyone else involved.

The Billings Fire Department responded to the scene and immediately put out the fire. Initial reports indicate that the fire was caused by an overheated engine and bad motor fluid leak, although postal officials are still investigating.

The Billings Post Office estimates that about 300-400 pieces of mail were damaged and most of that mail addressed to the streets listed below is salvageable.

Most of the fire-damaged and salvageable mail was advertising and bulk business mail. Approximately two parcels were destroyed.

The damaged and salvageable mail applies to the 900 and up block of Nutter, along with the surrounding streets of Erickson, Crystal Lake, Butterfly Lane, Lonesome Pine, Claim Jumper, Hardrock, Mirror Lake, Shamrock Ct., Lilly Valley, Aster, Jonquil, Goldpan, Sapphire, Nugget, Calendula and Grubstake.

Most of the salvageable mail for these affected postal addresses will be delivered to these Heights residents in the next couple of days after it dries and can be properly prepared for delivery. Customers expecting mail on these affected streets should allow the Billings Post Office a couple of days to get the mail properly prepared and salvageable for delivery.

Billings Heights residents in the streets listed above and who think they could have had mail lost in the fire, can contact the Postal Service District Consumer Affairs department in Billings at 657-5776 with any questions.
