The Montana Republican Party wants homosexual acts to remain illegal in Big Sky country.

During June's Republican convention in Billings, the GOP adopted the platform to keep a long-held stance deeming homosexual acts illegal.

The platform plank is under the category of Crime and it reads: "We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal."

The policy was first adopted in 1997 after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws. But the June stance has caught the attention of many bloggers and state media, and is now drawing attention in national headlines; a Facebook page protesting the GOP policy has already attracted hundreds of fans and comments.

Republican Senator John Brueggeman of Polson said on Sunday that his party's stance to keep homosexuality illegal couldn't be more un-American.

"Really, what you're talking about is Nazi Germany. That's the kind of policy that you saw in that era, in under Fascist sort of regime. I think the statement in a word is un-American. It flies in the face of everything we consider to be liberty, pursuit of happiness and be able to live your life in a free manner," Brueggeman told Montana's News Station.

He did some digging in the books and he says he found Montana law still "prohibits homosexual activity."

He told us he plans to put in a bill on Monday to have that language removed from Montana law.

"I did a little research and apparently it's still law. It's still on the books in Montana statute which I find incredibly offensive as well. So I'll put in a bill to eliminate that next session," he said.

A call has been placed to Montana GOP executive director Bowen Greenwood on the latest attention that's been drawn by the GOP party's platform.
