A Mission Valley mother grizzly and her two cubs will be heading to a Kentucky zoo next week, after months of breaking into chicken coops and killing livestock.
Tribal Bear Manager Stacy Courville tells us that the 5-year old female bear has been breaking into coops and attacking livestock since May. Since the, she escaped every trap, wildlife officials put out for her, until Thursday. Her cubs were then caught Friday.
The bear has been handled twice before, but just will not stay away from chicken coops in the Mission Valley.
The family of bears are being held in a family group trap until they can be transported to the Kentucky zoo sometime this week.
Courville added this is the first litter from the female bear.
(July 30, 2010) A mother grizzly bear and her two cubs continue to hit chicken coops around the Mission Valley.
Tribal wildlife officials tried two weeks ago to catch a mother griz breaking into chicken coops near Timber Lane in Ronan. They started tracking her on May 20th. But she is too smart, because she has been avoiding strategically placed traps left by bear managers.
Friday night officials will try again to catch the mother grizzly bear with another trap, this time by using live chickens and hope she will fall for it.
If they do catch her, wildlife experts say they will have to destroy her. She has hit 6 chicken coops and one pig pen this summer.
