Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock has joined other attorneys general across the nation in demanding that the classified ad website Craigslist.org remove its adult services section.

They say the website cannot adequately block potentially illegal ads and they sent a joint letter to Craigslist calling for the San Francisco-based organization to get rid of its adult services category.

Bullock said that Craigslist is not completely screening out ads that promote prostitution and child trafficking.

The website has implemented several safeguards as it has evolved over the years. In November 2008, after pressure from 40 state attorneys general, Craigslist required posters to provide a working phone number and pay a fee for placing an ad in the erotic services section.

In May 2009, the website renamed the section known as "erotic services" to "adult services" and said it would adopt a manual screening process, where postings would be reviewed before publishing, but many state officials believe Craigslist is still not doing enough to stop illegal ads from appearing.

In addition to Montana, the following states have signed the letter: Arkansas, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
