Big Sky Crossfit opened its doors in Great Falls this week with a new approach to getting in shape.

Owner Ryan Smith explained, "I don't really rely on machines. The only machine I rely on...is the Concept 2 Rower. That's the only machine, the other machine basically is just yourself - your body. And basically all I am doing is taking old-school training and basically putting a new-school look onto it."

Sessions are structured almost like school: when you walk in, there's a detailed "lesson plan" on the board, including a warm up, the work out, and finally a cool down.

Smith said that CrossFit is constantly varied, high intensity functional movements; some days involve running, others incorporate strength training, and some gymnastics.

Smith said of his clients, "It's a love-hate relationship in a way because when you do the work out you say, 'What am I doing to myself, are you kidding me?', but after, you're like, 'Wow, I can't believe I just did that, I feel great now!'"

Smith trained for more than a year and received his certification in February, and as now Big Sky Crossfit is a one-man show, but as business picks up he plans on bringing more people on board.

Big Sky Crossfit is located at 528 Smelter Avenue NE and is also on Facebook.
