HELENA - A new poll shows former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer isn't necessarily a shoo-in for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Max Baucus (D-MT).
Public Policy Polling shows Schweitzer would easily defeat both Republicans Corey Stapleton and Champ Edmunds in a hypothetical race.
However, if freshman U.S. Representative Steve Daines (R-MT) or former Montana Governor Marc Racicot were to jump into the race, it's a much different scenario.
In a potential Daines/Schweitzer match-up, Schweitzer leads, but only 48% to 45%.
And in a match-up between former governors Racicot and Schweitzer, Racicot comes out one point ahead.
The Public Policy automated phone poll surveyed 807 registered Montana voters last week.
It has a margin of error of plus/or minus 3.4%.
