No serious injuries in helicopter's "hard landing" in Flathead County

A helicopter's "hard landing" near Mt. Aeneas in the Jewel Basin area of Flathead County left a pilot and his passengers with little more than cuts and bruises on Thursday.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry tells us the helicopter lost directional control as it was carrying two county employees to a remote radio repeater site in the Swan Range northeast of Bigfork.

The pilot was not able to regain control of the helicopter, but was able to safely perform an emergency landing in the snow below the ridge top.

The three people on board were flown out of the area by another helicopter.

Two of them were taken to a hospital as a safety precaution, but were not injured.

Sheriff Curry said, "The pilot in this case did an excellent job. Any helicopter crash you can walk away from is a good one. He did everything he was supposed to do to get the helicopter on the ground and make sure everyone on board survived without injuries. We're very fortunate in this instance that it turned out the way it did."

The investigation has been turned over the FAA and NTSB.
