Northern Lights thrill Montanans

The Aurora Borealis - better known as the Northern Lights - made an appearance in some parts of Montana on Tuesday night.

Vikki Higginbotham shared these pictures that were taken about 20 miles north of Great Falls toward Fort Benton (scroll down for larger views).

We also received reports of people seeing the Northern Lights in Babb, Browning, Harlem, and Hingham.

Vikki also shared a link to SoftServeNews.com, which provides information about more viewing opportunities: SoftServeNews.com/Aurora.htm

Be sure to look skyward on Wednesday night, as there is a pretty good chance that they will be visible again.

The Geophysical Institute of the Universty of Alaska at Fairbanks says (link):

Forecast: Auroral activity will be active. Weather permitting, active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Igaluit to Juneau, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Sept-Iles, and visible low on the horizon from Vancouver, Great Falls, Pierre, Madison, Lansing, Ottawa, Portland and St. Johns.

If you have pictures to share, you can post them to the Viewer Photo Gallery page or email them to us at krtvnews@gmail.com.

There was some disappointment in late January when the Northern Lights were expected to be visible to many people in Montana, but conditions just didn't pan out, for the most part.

Here's some of the reaction to Tuesday night's event from the KRTV Facebook page:

Ninas Stakos: see um here in babb

Joeblackfeet L Hall: Wow...should see them here in browning....really greenish...an redish....almoat purple @ times.....very...very cool.....never seen them tht bright of colors before!!!

Savana Doney: They are awesome here in Harlem!

Jennifer Gorder: I'm totally bummed. I'm further north and its cloudy. But my friends at Solar Ham said the two x flares tonight should bring more. Clouds can go away.

Robert W Thomson: Ran up to the top of Gore Hill and we could see them!

Vikki Higginbotham: The lights are peaking again at 6.33 Kp for the next 30 minutes or so. Anything above 4.3 is visible and more colorful the higher it is for us. Farther north in the state gets more colors as reported in Browning.

Jessica Pierce Stevenson: We got to see them again north of Hingham!!

Kathleen T. Johnson: We saw them up here on Gore Hill. Used to see spectacular northern lights when we lived in Plentywood but haven't seen them since we moved here nine years ago
