The Augusta girls basketball team has one of the most entertaining backcourts in the Northern C Division, thanks in part to strong play from junior Britta Young. The Lady Elks guard is a great spot-up shooter, strong dribbler and all-around outstanding passer. Young does a great job leading the young Augusta squad, even if her coach isn't fond of her not picking a specific side on the court. We caught up with Young in our latest Sports Xtra Spotlight.
MTN: Your coach (Truitt Kinna) coaches both boys and girls, does he ever get confused as to which team he's coaching? Do your plays have the same name as the guys?
YOUNG: "Truitt usually knows whats going on if he is coaching the boys or us girls. But we all have the same plays and the same offense as the guys so that probably helps him out."
MTN: Fill in the blank: My coach hates it when I ______.
YOUNG: "My coach hates it when I don't pick a side of the court. I think I get yelled at every time I don't do it."
MTN: What is your most embarrassing basketball moment?
YOUNG: "My most embarrassing basketball moment would have to be last year when we played Valier, the clock was down to 2 seconds and I was on the line for free throws. Truitt calls the time-out and tells me 'Britta, you are going to purposely miss this free throw so we can get the rebound. But you HAVE to hit the rim! You HAVE to hit the rim!' It seemed pretty easy when he told me, but when I went up to the line the ref threw me the ball and I saw that no one is set up for a rebound, so I quickly hucked it at the hoop and it completely missed the rim and hit the backboard."
MTN: Which Grammy-winner would you like to take the award away from?
YOUNG: "Taylor Swift."
MTN: Fill in the blank: In our fridge at home ______ has been sitting in there the longest.
YOUNG: "In our fridge at home roasted garlic bread has been sitting in there the longest."
MTN: What was the last movie you saw in theaters? What's your review of that movie?
YOUNG: "I went to Contraband. I'd say it was definitely worth seeing."
MTN: What is the one thing that freaks you out more than anything else?
YOUNG: "I would have to say that sharks freak me out the most."
MTN: If there were a book written about your life, what would it be called?
YOUNG: "The Adventures of Britta Bryce."
