A house fire left a Great Falls family of three homeless on Sunday.

Around 12:30 p.m., the Great Falls Fire Department received a call from a house located at 3603 2nd Avenue South.

Fire Marshall Doug Bennyhoff says the fire originated in the basement of the home, and is believed to have started from a candle left burning.

Bennyhoff added, "When we got on scene, the basement, there was a large amount of fire in the basement and up the stairwell and in the kitchen. There was a significant amount of damage here." He estimated up to $20,000 in damage caused by the blaze.

Bennyhoff says they will continue investigating the fire, and the family will be helped by the Red Cross for temporary living arrangements.

No one was injured in the fire, but a family cat died in the blaze.
