Train derails west of Helena

Crews remain on the scene of a train derailment about 13 miles west of Helena, working in cold temperatures and occasional heavy snow flurries.

According to Montana Rail Link spokeswoman Lynda Frost, the derailment happened at around 12:45 a.m. when an eastbound train carrying 13 empty cars came off the tracks. No injuries were reported.

The train impacted 10 other railcars which were parked near the accident; three of the impacted cars were carrying corrosive material, but Montana Rail Link has determined there is no leakage of hazardous materials.

Crews are working to clear the tracks, but at this point transportation is halted; Montana Rail Link expects the line to be cleared by Tuesday evening.

The cause of the derailment is being investigated.
