MISSOULA - An apparent escape attempt by two juveniles on their way to court in downtown Missoula on Tuesday afternoon was caught by on video.
MTN News reporter Jacqueline Quynh was shooting weather video when she heard a commotion.
When her camera swung around, she saw a young man in an orange jumpsuit in shackles running from a Missoula County Sheriff's deputy; several other people, possibly family members, can be seen trying to catch up.
Eventually, the deputy caught the juvenile.
A second juvenile also tried to escape according to authorities, but both were taken into custody.
Quynh followed them back into court to get more information.
The judge then raised their bonds, one of them to $100,000, and the second to $250,000.
We do not yet know what charges they were facing when they tried to escape.
We will update you as we get more details.
(UPDATE, 6:50 pm) The Missoula County Sheriff's Office released the following information:
On Tuesday, February 11th, 2014 three juveniles had been transported to District Court to appear on charges. After their appearances and while still in leg irons, belly chains and orange jumpsuits, two of the three juveniles attempted to escape by running.
The two ran in different directions. At the time of the escape attempt the three were in the custody of two juvenile detention officers. One of the officers had to stay with the one juvenile who did not attempt to escape while the other ran after one of the runners. The other was captured by other court officers who had witnessed the escape.
Both of the juveniles were captured in short order and returned to court where they both appeared on escape charges. Both of their bonds were substantially increased and they were transported back to the detention center.
The incident is being investigated.
