HELENA -- The elusive wolverine has been spotted in more than one place recently. Field crews have been documenting the presence of this and other rare carnivores in the Swan and Blackfoot watersheds.

This month, a report summarizing data from the past three years was issued by a coalition of groups working on the Southwestern Crown Collaborative Carnivore Monitoring Project.

Among other wildlife, the project has genetically verified the presence of 15 individual wolverine between 2012-2014.

A specialty license plate, featuring a painting of the wolverine in its natural habitat by artist Ron Ukrainetz, is now available for purchase.

Buying the special edition license plates supports two of the organizations helping to monitor rare carnivores and conserve wildlife habitat: Northwest Connections and Swan Ecosystem Center.

The report and the Montana license plate are intended to highlight these lesser known carnivores that dwell in the forests and mountains of the Northern Rockies.
