BILLINGS -- Eight horses have been found shot and killed on the Crow Indian Reservation outside of Lodge Grass.

Law enforcement officers say this happened a half mile west of the Lodge Grass Cemetery on tribal trust land within the last couple of weeks.

No one has been arrested, but officials says that they do have a suspect.

Montana Department of Livestock investigator Matt Noyes called the case unusual because of the number of animals involved and because there is a suspect; normally, he said, a case might involve one animal and there may not be a suspect.

Noyes performed autopsies on the horses last Wednesday and Thursday.

He sent a rifle and bullets to the state crime lab in Missoula.

The possible victims told MTN News last week they saw law enforcement detain a possible suspect, but Noyes says no one has been arrested at this point.

"Some (horses) were shot multiple times," Noyes said. "We were able to retrieve a firearm so we're sending that off to the state crime lab to see if that is the firearm that did shoot these horses. Then we would have a suspect with an arrest."

Tribal membership or non-tribal membership of the suspect and horse owners will determine if the case goes to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the federal court, or to the Big Horn County Attorney.
