MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE -

Malmstrom Air Force Base was recognized as the best ICBM wing in the Air Force on Wednesday night, winning the Blanchard Trophy.

It's Malmstrom's first win since 2008.

They also grabbed the Blackburn Trophy for best ICBM Maintenance, Klotz Trophy for best ICBM and helicopter operations, and the Innovation Trophy.

The 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 150 intercontinental ballistic missiles that are secured in underground silos in dozens of sites across central Montana.

For the past few months about 450 airmen have been competing in the challenge.

Teams from security forces, helicopter, and maintenance crews traveled to different bases for the challenge.

They participated in innovative thinking and teamwork that is a part of the AFGSC mission.

Global Strike Challenge coordinator Major Justin Secrest that the airmen who compete in the challenge only have a month to train.

"All the wings identify their best and brightest and they train them up and they send them off to compete to demonstrate their skills in what they do for American every day, which is maintain, operate, secure and support the missiles we have out here for our country. So the competition gives them an opportunity to do that at a very high level," Secrest said.

Malmstrom brought home several other awards, including the Best Security Forces M240 Crew, Best Facilities Maintenance Team, Best Missile Munitions Team Trophy, Best ICBM Missile Handling Team, and Best Communication Maintenance Team.
