HELENA -

A herd of elk got hit by a train near East Helena sometime on Wednesday or Thursday.

Officials estimate the train was traveling at about 60 miles per hour at the time.

It happened near U.S. Highway 12 and Spokane Creek Road outside of East Helena.

The train killed 23 animals.

None of the elk were salvageable for meat.

Montana Rail Link employees were dispatched to remove the carcasses.

We have not received any reports of injuries or damage to the train staff or equipment.
