GREAT FALLS -

Science lab technicians at Great Falls College-MSU shared technology and knowledge with students and teachers across the country today during a "Remote Instrumentation and Virtual Labs Content Carnival."

The online event showcased the value of "The North American Network of Science Labs Online, or the NANSLO Lab" located in Great Falls.

The remote, web-based lab is only one of two in North America where lab equipment is operated by users from home.

Students are able to log in and conduct experiments at the click of a mouse. Web-based labs like NANSLO allow flexibility in student's schedules and can be used in a variety of subjects including nursing and chemistry.

Dr. Brenda Canine, the NANSLO Lab Manager, said, "By controlling a microscope they can see different things on the slides they can get their science labs completed in an online setting."

The NANSLO Lab also works alongside local schools and college programs across the state.

The NANSLO website provides more information, including this overview:

 Through NANSLO, students:

  • Gain access to sophisticated lab equipment remotely.
  • Experience lab opportunities that may not be available locally or difficult to schedule based on personal and work commitments.
  • Robotically control lab equipment through web-enabled software.
  • Access accurate scientific data making the experience authentic for students.
  • College data in real time.
  • Opportunities to work as a group on experiments just as in a face-to-face setting.
  • Ability to capture high quality pictures for assignments and reports.
  • Expand opportunities to practice what has already been covered in class.
  • Learn software skills that can be leveraged in class and in work.
