Nick VanHorssen shines for Helena High School track after broken leg

Posted: Updated:

Nick VanHorssen can still remember when it happened.

“It was Week 5 against Great Falls High. It was the fourth quarter, 4th and 2 and it was a pass play out to me, a five-yard out route.”

A routine play quickly turned to a nightmare.

“I got tackled weird and it just snapped.”

VanHorssen – an MSU Bobcat football commit – thought his football career was finished.

“Yeah that was difficult. That was definitely the hardest thing because I was bed-ridden for three weeks and didn’t really have much company. That was on my mind the whole time. It was a really hard time in my life, but I’m glad my friends had me covered, you know?”

Restless from being tied down, the senior decided to prove he could return to his former self as one of the top sprinters and jumpers in Montana’s Class AA.

“It was actually a pretty speedy recovery. They didn’t expect me to be doing track this year. It was painful in the beginning, it was hard. But, I got through it.”

Truth is, Nick VanHorssen is still recovering, at least mentally. He admits to subconsciously being worried about re-injuring his left leg, particularly in long jump – that’s the leg he jumps off.

“In the beginning it was just to make sure that I could run again, you know? Right now it’s just to qualify for state in my individual events, because our relay has already qualified. I’m not really where I want to be yet, just mentally. I’m still getting the coordination back, but I’m sure it will come within the next few weeks.”

Months ago, VanHorssen wasn’t sure he would compete in sports again at any level. Now, he’s enjoying each practice and meet with his friends.

“Just being able to compete again. This is my last high school season, so it’s just really fun to be out here with the guys again. Most of these guys play football, too, so it’s just nice to be a part of that team again.”

VanHorssen will keep that feeling beyond the halls of Helena High. Montana State kept its promise and – despite playing in only five games his senior season – he will continue his athletic career in the fall as a Bobcat.
