Glasgow's Phillips is among the best javelin throwers in the nation

Posted: Updated:

"Why do you like track so much?"

"Because I'm good at it, I guess," says Glasgow's Benji Phillips with a bit of laughter.

That may actually be an understatement by Scottie junior.

He currently has the second farthest long jump, fastest 100 meters, and farthest jav throw in Class B.

"It's really nice that I can help the team in so many different ways instead of just one way in jav," said Phillips.

Javelin is by far and away Benji's best event.

He currently ranks 15th in the nation with a throw of 196'3, according to Athletic.net.

That, according to his track and field coach and father Tim Phillips, is starting to get him noticed.

"You get to that 200 foot level, that's what they're kind of looking for- a lot of the premiere NCAA programs," said Tim. "So yeah I think he could have some good success."

"It's pretty neat because I'm going to go probably throw in college," said the younger Phillips. "So it's encouraging to see that I'm up to the level that everyone else at the top tier is."

They're are plenty of eyes on Benji.

But for now, both father and son are just trying to do what every father and son duo should do best: have a good time.

"We've gone a little bit to a couple of camps," said Tim. "You go to a couple of these places where you see some college coaches and they're a little bit excited so that really gets you going. Day to day we don't really worry about it too much. We just try to have some fun and enjoy it."
