CMR sweeps Butte, earns automatic bid to Class AA State Tournament

Posted: Updated:

For a fourth consecutive year, the CMR softball team has clinched the top seed in the AA Eastern Conference and will earn an automatic bid to the Class AA Tournament.

The Rustlers entered Thursday needing a doubleheader sweep of Butte to clinch, and did just that grinding out a 6-1 victory in game one before exploding for a 12-0 shutout in the second game.

“To be able to come back and respond the way we that we did in the second game was big,” said head coach Lindsey Gustafson. “And it’s good to get that spot and be on the other side of the bracket as other powerful teams.”

Thursday’s game marked the final time that five CMR seniors took the field at the Multi-Sports complex. By virtue of the automatic bid to State, the Rustlers won’t host a playoff game which resulted in some mixed emotions for senior infielder Myla Robbins.

“It’s definitely bittersweet,” said Robbins. “But I love the girls they’re my family and it feels good to get the win with them and go to state one more time. It’s special.”

And it could be even more special at the State AA Tournament in two weeks in Kalispell. Despite being the top seed in each of the past three years, CMR hasn’t finished any higher than third - often struggling in big moments at state. This year, they have a creative way to make sure the outcome will be different.

“We’re really superstitious,” said senior Courtney Schroeder. “We’ve tried to stay away from the things that maybe didn’t let us get to the state championship last year.”

What kind of things?

“We don’t wear eye black anymore,” she said. “We used to do that and then drag it for home runs. We haven’t done that this year and we’re not going to start because we don’t want to mess anything up. And our pre-game ritual is the same. Everything we say has to be the same.”

So far, so good!

CMR will hit the road this weekend for games with Big Sky and Hellgate. And then all eyes are on Monday’s crosstown showdown where the Rustlers will try to avenge their only loss of the season against the Bison.

“Yeah, we definitely want revenge,” said Robbins. First pitch is set for Monday, May 16th at 4:30pm.
