Hobson Girls Track and Field finds stride

Posted: Updated:

When you ask Hobson track and field coach Ken Roberts why he loves the sport so much, he knows the answer to the question before you're even finished.

"Because racing is fun. Just everything about racing. I don't care what it is. With your little or big brothers, on the ski hill, I don’t care, racing’s fun!"

"Oh, Mr. Roberts is the best coach," exclaimed sophomore distance runner Christina Eike. "He gets into everything. He gets excited about all of our races. It’s funny because at meets he gets really nervous and he’ll drink five cups of coffee. I don’t know. He’s just so passionate about it it’s funny."

"He’ll call me sometimes if I had a bad practice and he’ll be like, ‘I think this is what’s wrong.’ We’ll talk through it and it’ll be right before I’m going to sleep and I’ll be like, ‘Okay we’ll talk about it tomorrow.’ Or he’ll pull me into his classroom during the day and be like, ‘I found this new video. I think we can fix it,’" says senior hurdler Ember Drivdahl. "So it’s really awesome to have someone who cares so much about my success and is willing to help me so much."

Others have taken notice.

Last year the track team had five athletes; this year they've nearly tripled to 14 participants. The majority of them are female.

"This year with ten girls I get to practice with other girls and on our small dirt track it actually is crowded it feels like sometimes," Drivdahl says in between laughter.

Crowded or not, those numbers have led to more overall team success.

The girls squad took third at a meet with over 15 local Class B and C teams just a few weeks ago.

"It is really nice to have them get into a meet and have them get into a meet and be like, ‘Okay, let’s see what the team can do.’" said Roberts. "So it wasn’t just personal in terms of the motivation. Everyone’s running for each other."

The team is running for even more though.

Track and field is the only sport that Hobson doesn’t co-op for.

And once again that word comes up: Passion.

Because the girls run for something bigger than themselves.

"That means a lot to me," said Eike. "We’ve co-oped in everything and the co-op is really great but getting to still be a part of... Just being from Hobson being a Tiger. I don’t know there’s just something about it that… It’s nice to be from home."
