Flint Rasmussen: Clowning around as coach

Posted: Updated:

For rodeo fans, Flint Rasmussen's name is automatically associated with one word: Clown. After all, that's what his job is.

But for Choteau high school track athletes, his name is associated with another word: Coach.

"I excelled at track in Choteau. I still have the school record in the long jump. My claim to fame!" says Flint through laughter.

With all of the hooplaing he does at rodeo events, it actually does make sense that the eight-time PRCA Rodeo Clown of the Year was good at track.

"I think track is the purest sport that we have within the schools because we line up and we see who runs the fastest, who throws the farthest, who jumps the farthest, and that's it," says Flint. "I think it should be the only spring sport."

So when his daughter Paige joined the track team her freshman year at Choteau, it's only natural that he joined the team as well.

"He's been my coach since forever," says the youngest Rasmussen. "He's such a good coach and he always puts us in a good mood. He's just really dedicated to helping us. Not just me but all of the team."

"He jokes around with them but he motivates in a good way," says Choteau Head Track and Field Coach Callee Peebles. "Makes them work hard. I think high school students can relate to that goofiness he provides."

His goofiness normally puts dinner on the table for the Rasmussen clan, but this job isn't as lucrative.

"Him volunteering his time just says a lot about his heart and his passion for the sport," says Peebles. "We're very grateful."

But through this job he's earned something else, and that's something money can't buy.

"This is one thing that everyday at 3:30 I go out and engage kids and share some of the knowledge I have. It's kind of rejuvenated me in a way."
