GREAT FALLS -

Trent Scentail Smith has been charged with assault with a weapon after he allegedly attacked a fellow inmate in the Cascade County Detention Center.

Court documents state that the victim, identified as Branden Miesmer, told detention center officers that he had been sitting at a table eating breakfast on Wednesday morning, and the next thing he knew, he woke up on the floor with people around him.

Officers reviewed surveillance video, which "clearly" showed Smith picking up a mop wringer, and using both hands, swung it at Miesmer, hitting him on the right rear side of his head.

The force of the blow knocked Miesmer off of his seat, and the surveillance video showed him unconscious on the floor for several seconds.

Court documents state that Miesmer sustained a laceration about two inches long and 2 millimeters deep.

Smith has convictions in Georgia, Kentucky, and Montana for charges including child abuse/neglect, domestic assault, and selling amphetamines.

He is in the county jail on a federal hold as an inmate.

Smith has been charged with one felony count of assault with a weapon.
