CMR softball team reflects on state championship

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

You'll probably catch CMR cheering, "You better work! Yeah? You better work! Yeah!" at every game they play.

This past weekend, Rustlers did not lose a single game at the state softball tournament en route to a AA championship.

So, it’s safe to say that they, indeed, did work.

"I’m already getting emotional," said Head Coach Lindsey Gustafson. "This team just never gives up. They compete and compete and compete."

The competition included having to win against crosstown rival Great Falls High School on a walk off home run, and going up against defending state champion Glacier twice.

But at the end of the day, CMR got their coveted hardware.

"You’re going to come back in twenty years and that rug’s going to be up there. You’re going to just know that we put it up there and it just means everything to us," said senior Myla Robbins.

It means a little extra to this squad as well, because of history.

CMR last won a state softball title in 2012, and every year since has been the number one seed out of the Eastern AA. However, during those years, they’ve failed to make a state championship game.

"The past four years, it’s been tough," said Pitcher Courtney Schroeder. "Now in 2016 getting the job done, it feels so good and hopefully next year they can get it and hopefully in four years too."

But for the time being, the Rustlers get to focus on the present. And a team that is now etched in the history books.

"It’s just so awesome," said Gustafson. "This group deserves it so much. They’re good athletes, they’re good people and it’s fun to see it all come together."

"I’ve been playing with most of these girls since I was about 10 years old, maybe even younger," said junior Savanna Voyles. "It’s crazy. They’re awesome, they’re like family. It’s so nice to be able play with them and win a state championship with them."
