Conrad-Choteau steam-rolls to second straight Class B/C softball championship

Posted: Updated:

Winning for the Conrad Choteau softball team has become expected the last two years, but that didn’t stop the tears on Saturday.

"That’s everyone’s dream to get a state championship and we just got two," said senior Emily Harwood between tears. "It’s the last time I’m going to play with these girls so I’m just really excited."

"I'm more emotional for some reason on this one. I don’t know," mused Conrad-Choteau Head Coach Mick Morris.

The Cowgirls only allowed two runs all tournament, ten run ruled three of the four teams they faced, and scored 36 runs overall.

Pretty incredible, especially considering last week at divisionals they only scored five times in three games.

"At the state tournament, everybody’s going to come to play and that’s what happened," said junior pitcher Tristin Achenbach. "We didn’t like winning by one run last weekend. That was not a good feeling. So coming out and doing what we did made it much better."

Someone who couldn’t have played much better? The last person quoted.

Achenbach is transferring to CMR next year, so this weekend was the last time she’ll wear the Conrad-Choteau uniform. She made it count with 57 strikeouts over 24 innings played and perfect game in the championship. Her catcher sums the performance up best.

"My thumb hurts a little. Just kidding!" giggles Harwood. "She just amazing. She played really well and we had great teamwork behind her if people did get a hit and we’re just all there for each other and it was really awesome."

Just as Harwood did, when asked about Achenbach’s dominance both coach and pitcher bring it back around to the team.

Because that’s what Saturday was all about.

"We had a lot of young girls who never played. So for them to come into the state tournament and dominate the way they did- as good as she was, which was unhittable- we scored a lot of runs. Proud of our team," said Morris.

"It feels fantastic to just be here with my teammates and everything that we’ve gone through," said Achenbach. "Losing the state championship my freshman year and coming back two years in a row. I don’t think anything really compares to that."
