Potkonjak, Esh take day one leads at Montana Junior Golf championships

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS – Joseph Potkonjak and Kylie Esh hold day one leads at the Montana State Junior Golf championships at Briarwood Golf Club.

Potkonjak, who finished third in the Class B state golf tournament in the spring, shot an opening round 70 (-2). He will attend Carroll College beginning in the fall. Potkonjak, a Bigfork graduate, holds a four-stroke lead over Joey Moore of Billings.

Esh recently moved to Montana from Lewiston, Idaho and proved she belongs in the conversation of Montana’s top teen golfers. She fired a 2-over-par 76 to open the tournament and currently holds a seven stroke lead. Bozeman’s Hannah Rosanova enters the final round in second place.

Esh’s father, Joey, is the head golf pro at Mission Mountain Golf Club in Ronan. She was a nominee for the 54th annual North Idaho sports banquet and the Idaho athletics hall of fame.

The top two scorers in each age group will be invited to compete in the Montana-Alberta Cup in Whitefish later this summer. The top three overall scorers, along with one captain’s pick, will have the opportunity to play in the Junior America’s Cup. The boys will play in Guadalajara, Mexico while the girls competition is set for Modesto, California.

The final round of the Montana State Junior Golf championships tees off at Briarwood on Tuesday morning.
