UGF's de Souza living the American dream - KRTV News in Great Falls, Montana

UGF's de Souza living the American dream

Posted: Updated:

To most people, a Toyota is a pretty regular car. For Rodrigo de Souza and his family- it’s anything but.

“My dad actually was the one crying [when I bought the car] because cars in Brazil are really expensive and my family never had a car before,’ said de Souza.

Six years ago, the midfielder moved from Santos, Brazil to Montverde, Florida to play high school soccer.

That transition in itself was difficult, but there was one thing that made it even harder.

“I didn’t know any English. So I went to Florida just knowing simple things like colors, animals but I didn’t know how to speak at all. I had a lot of embarrassing moments. I remember a girl saying, ‘So you play soccer?’ and I didn’t understand what she was saying so I said, ‘Maybe.’ And everybody started laughing.”

De Souza went on to win a high school soccer national championship, play all four years at UGF, including leading the Argos to their first NAIA tournament this season, and be an NAIA scholar athlete his final two years.

All of that lead to an even bigger accomplishment for the de Souza clan: The family’s first college graduate.

“My dad told me that my mom was crying at the time. They are really proud of me. There is no better feeling than having your parents tell you they are proud of you because you have done things that they haven’t.”

Upon graduation, he decided he wanted to stay in the United States and work in Great Falls, but that required changing his green card status.

“You have to just pray to see if you are approved or not. My due date was July 3rd. If I was not approved by July 3rd I would have to leave the country.”

Just a week and a half ago, the 22 year-old found out that his application was approved and that he could begin work at his job as a commodity trader at Columbia Grain immediately.

"I called Kent, my boss, and I just told him, ‘Hey Kent, I got the papers. I’m ready to work. I’m excited let’s do it. Can I start tomorrow?’ It was a good feeling. It was unforgettable.”

It looks like his unforgettable journey won’t be stopping anytime soon.

“I love America. All of my best opportunities in my life were here. People when they believe in you and they trust you, they open up opportunities for you and then it just depends on you to get them and step up in your life. I want to stay here and see where life is going to take me.”
