Voyagers' Schroeder proud of former team winning CWS

Coastal Carolina's win in the CWS made ripples around the nation because the program is not a member of a big 5 power conference. For one baseball player living in Great Falls, the win was anything but a surprise.

"Most of the guys were like, 'Oh you guys are the underdogs. We'll pick you to win,' but I was like, 'Oh, you guys don't know us. We'll be just fine.'"

Casey Schroeder, who is currently a catcher for the Voyagers, played for the Chanticleers in 2015.

Before the deciding Game 3 between Coastal and Arizona he didn't talk to KRTV/KXLH because he didn't want to jinx his college squad, and it turned out to be a good call. Many of his Voyager teammates rooted for a Coastal win as well.

"On the bus, all the guys were huddle around one phone watching it and it was really nerve racking," said the 22 year-old.

The moment the Chanticleers took the title presented a variety of emotions for Schroeder.

"Bittersweet moment for me because I was so happy for them and happy that they won and bought the title home and kind of the bitter part was that I missed it by a year. It was awesome. Knew all the guys out on the field, was really close with them, really close with the coaches. I was just so happy for them. So exciting."

A few weeks ago, the White Sox drafted 2016 Coastal third baseman Zach Remillard in the MLB draft. It is presumed that his landing spot will be Great Falls, but there has been no official word from the organization yet.
