Marc Palmer of Missoula has been arrested on a charge of deliberate homicide for allegedly harming an infant, causing the baby's death.
According to the medical examiner, the 5 month-old baby died of asphyxiation.
Prosecutors allege that on March 30th, first responders were dispatched to a trailer on Sherwood Street for a report of an unresponsive baby.
The baby was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. Medical examiners noted the baby had "suspicious bruising" around the mouth, leading police to investigate further.
Prosecutors say Palmer was staying with a girlfriend at her home, when one night, the baby was fussing and Palmer tended to him. The next morning the woman found the baby unresponsive.
Police conducted interviews and searched the residence, finding bloody baby wipes in the trash and a pair of pants with blood on them.
Palmer claimed he had gotten a bloody nose and used the wipes to clean up. A DNA test later revealed that the blood belonged to the baby.
An autopsy revealed bruising on the baby's head and face, along with a tear in the baby's mouth, and determined the cause of death to be asphyxia by smothering.
The baby's name has not yet been released.
According to the Montana Sexual/Violent Offender Registry, Palmer has convictions in Washington for child rape and child molestation.
Palmer, 25 years old, is scheduled to appear in Missoula Justice Court for an initial appearance on the charges on Wednesday afternoon.
