Aragon set for Olympic Trials

Posted: Updated:

EUGENE, Ore. – Billings teenager Christina Aragon is 24 hours away from the biggest race of her life.

The Senior High graduate, who won 12 state championships during her high school career, will lace up her shoes in the 1,500-meter run of the United States Olympic Trials on Thursday evening.

Aragon owns Montana all-class state records in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, as well as the Class AA record in the 400, winning the Montana Gatorade girls track and field athlete of the year the past two years. She has posted some of the fastest prep times in the country over the past two years, including the third-fastest 1,500 ever run by a high school girl. With wins at the Adidas Dream Mile and the Great Southwest Classic already under her belt, pressure isn’t something the 19-year-old is worried about.

“If I can make it out of the first prelims, that would be really awesome,” she told MTN Sports Wednesday. “I’m obviously going to do my very best and make it as far as I can, but qualifying for the Olympics is a pretty big thing.”

Aragon is one of 30 athletes who will line up for the starting gun in three heats of the 1,500 on Thursday. The first round begins around 7:26 p.m. MST. The top six athletes in each heat, along with the next six fastest times, will qualify for Friday’s semifinal round.

“This time it will probably just be something that I’m doing to get experience for if I did end up closer to qualifying maybe the next four or eight years,” she said.

On Tuesday, MileSplit USA, an online track and field publication, named Aragon to its high school all-American team in the 800-meter run and mile. Kalispell Glacier junior-to-be Annie Hill, who recently won the Nike Elite mile at Eugene, was also recognized in the mile.

Aragon continues to point out the experience factor in her first Olympic Trials, but she does already own head-to-head wins over collegiate and professional runners, some of whom will be running in the Trials, already in her short career.
