Porch atop crowded leaderboard at State Am

Montana State Golf Association media release

LAUREL – Ryan Porch of Kalispell leads after the first round of the 99th Montana State Amateur Golf Championship. Porch’s 68 puts him one shot clear of second place Mark Mance (Whitefish) and Caleb Stetzner (Anaconda) at Laurel Golf Club.

The beautifully manicured course played just shy of 7,000 yards, but players battled high 90-degree temperatures and quick greens.

Fourteen players were at or below par on the Par-72 course.

The State Amateur is conducted by the Montana State Golf Association (MSGA). One-hundred thirty-four players are competing in 14 flights.

Play will continue through Saturday as the three-round victor is assured to be a new champion. Defending champion Tom Swanson of Missoula is not in the field this year. The only past champions in the field, Gordon Webb (2008) and three-time champion Josh Hedge (2005-07), both shot even-par 72.
