Porch builds lead at 99th State Amateur

Posted: Updated:

LAUREL - Ryan Porch is 18 holes away from the biggest win of his golf career.

The Glacier High grad, from tiny Dayton, Mont. on Flathead Lake, fired a tournament-best -6, 66 Friday morning to take a seven-shot lead at the Montana Men's State Amateur golf tournament at Laurel Golf Club.

Porch carded eight birdies to just two bogeys on his round, including a chip-in birdie on No. 1, his 10th hole of the day after being the first group off the No. 10 tee at 7:15 am.  Porch birdied all four Par 5's, and is -7 on those four holes so far in the tournament.

The University of Idaho senior-to-be sits -10 after two days.  His closest challenger is Hamilton's Eli Rogers, who shot a second-round -2, 70 Friday.  Rogers made three birdies to just one bogey to reach -3 for the tournament.  He'll be a junior at Utah State in the fall.

None of Porch's chasers could keep up with him.  Tougher pin positions made birdies scarce.

Whitefish's Mark Mance poured in an opening-round high six birdies Thursday, but only managed one in his second round on his way to a +2, 74.  He's in fourth at -1 for the tournament.

Anaconda's Caleb Stetzner followed suit.  Stetzner also made six birdies on his way to an opening-round 69, and also only managed to birdie the Par 5 18th Friday.  The MSUB-commit struggled to a +7, 79 after six bogeys and a double-bogey.

Kalispell's Logan Iverson was in position to be in the final group coming into his final hole, the Par 5 9th, but took four shots trying to hit his ball out of a hazard on his way to a 9.  Iverson ended up with a 79, and is +5 for the tournament, 15 shots off Porch's pace.

Billings-native Jim Bob Coleman found four birdies on Friday to keep him near the top of the leaderboard.  Coleman's even-par 72 has him -2 for the tournament, alone in third place.

Only four players were under-par Friday - Porch, Rogers, Belgrade's Scott Eide, and West High graduate Jake Hedge, who fired a -1, 71.  Hedge is +2 for the tournament in a tie for eighth.

The final round begins Saturday morning with tee times in reverse order.  Porch, Rogers, and Coleman are expected to be in the final group, off between 12:30 and 1:00 pm.
