Ryan Porch runs away with State Am title

Posted: Updated:

LAUREL -Ryan Porch was sick of finishing second.

After being the runner-up at the last two Montana Men's State Amateur golf tournaments, plus finishing second at this past spring's Big Sky Championships, Porch emphatically claimed the 99th State Am title Saturday with a -9, 207 total, nine shots better than his nearest competitors at the Laurel Golf Club.

Porch got off to a shaky start in his final round, bogeying the first two holes, but his lead never dipped below six shots during his final round +1, 73.  He birdied his final two holes to put an exclamation point on the win.

The University of Idaho senior-to-be carded three total birdies and four bogeys on the day.  Only three players managed a better final round score.

JimBob Coleman was Porch's only competition for most of the day.  The Billings native got within six shots on several occasions on the front nine, but couldn't make enough ground up during tougher conditions Saturday, which included a steady wind throughout most of the afternoon.  Coleman shot a +2, 74 to finish even for the tournament in a tie for second place with Corvallis' Tyler Jessop.

Jessop shot the round of the day - a -3, 69.  He was the only player to break par.  Malta's Gordon Webb shot an even par, 72 to finish alone in 6th place, +6 for the tournament.  Libby's Joe Cielak also shot even par to finish in 19th at +13.

Jerry Pearsall and Mark Mance tied for fourth at +3 for the three-day event.  Pearsall, from Billings, shot 74, while Mance, a Whitefish native, fired a 76.

Hamilton's Eli Rogers started the day as Porch's closest competitor, but a quadruple-bogey 8 on the Par 4 2nd hole took him out of contention.  Rogers, who will be a senior at Utah State in the fall, didn't make a birdie in his final round 84, which dropped him into a tie for 10th.

Other Billings players on the leaderboard included Josh Hedge (+7, 7th), Jake Hedge (+8, 9th), Sean Benson (+9, 10th), and Austin Walter (+9, 10th).
