On Friday, the Great Falls Police Department, Cascade County Sheriff's Office, and the Cascade County Attorney provided an update on the investigation into the murder of Adam Petzack.

Petzack was an Army veteran from New York, and was reported missing in March. On Wednesday, investigators began searching the property where he was last seen alive.

During the five-month investigation into Petzack's disappearance, police say it became more clear that his disappearance involved foul play.

"Detective Perkins determined that Brandon Craft and his wife Katelyn Craft were involved in the case and he investigated their relationship with Petzack,"  Schaffer said.

During the months following, the lead detective noted that funds were being transferred from Petzack's bank account to the Crafts.

"On August 16th 2016, GFPD detectives interviewed Brandon and Katelyn Craft. Brandon Craft admitted he shot and killed Petzack, while living at a residence in rural Great Falls,"  Schaffer said.

The crime scene on 66th Avenue SW is in Cascade County's jurisdiction, so the Sheriff's Office joined the investigation.

"Human remains were recovered at the scene. The remains were transported to the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula for autopsy and identification,"  Schaffer said.

"One of the next major directions for our office is to continue to work with the police and the sheriff's office on the investigation. Particularly maintaining good contact with the victim's family so they are updated on the next steps," said John Parker, Cascade County Attorney.

"As investigators we can not be influenced by assumptions on what happened. We must rely on facts to prove or disprove the directions our case is taking us,"  Captain John Schaffer of the Great Falls Police Department said.

"We encourage the public to use discernment when discussing the information available. To rely on trusted and informed sources when forming their opinions," Schaffer said.

Brandon and Katelyn are currently in custody in Thurston County, Washington, awaiting extradition to Montana.

"He has been charged with deliberate homicide concerning the death of Adam Petzack. He is also being charged with tampering with evidence, as well as exploitation of a disabled person,"  Schaffer said.

Petzack was an Iraq war veteran suffering from PTSD, and a traumatic brain injury.

"We owe him our persistence, our dedication, and our professionalism in order to bring justice in this case,"  Schaffer said.

Currently, Craft is contesting extradition, which is delaying his return to Montana to be formally charged.

GFPD Animal Control Officer Kayla Wright is organizing searches to try to locate Petzack's service dog Buddy; click here for details.
